Diode mode applies a small test current and displays the voltage developed across the measured path. On a PCB, that path may contain several components, so the reading is best treated as a characteristic value rather than a simple pass-or-fail number.
Measure with power removed
Disconnect all power and discharge stored energy before testing. Choose a consistent ground reference and probe the same test points in the same polarity when making comparisons.
Compare equivalent circuits
Repeated channels, identical connectors and known-good boards provide excellent references. A large difference at one equivalent point can quickly identify the section that deserves further investigation.
Interpret low readings carefully
A low diode-mode value can indicate a shorted semiconductor or rail, but normal low-voltage circuitry can also produce low readings. Confirm suspicious results with resistance measurements and circuit context.
Use the result to narrow the fault
Once an abnormal node is found, inspect components connected to that net and compare both sides of inductors, resistors and protection devices to localize the difference.
Turn comparison readings into a structured fault path.
