How to Test the Primary Side of an SMPS

A stage-by-stage primary-side check helps distinguish input faults, startup problems and switching-stage failures.

Safety first: Offline SMPS primary circuits are directly related to mains potential and can contain lethal stored energy. Only qualified users with suitable equipment and isolation practices should perform energized primary-side measurements.

1. Inspect protection and rectification

With power removed and capacitors safely discharged, inspect the fuse, surge protection, NTC, bridge rectifier and switching devices. A blown fuse is a symptom; determine why it opened before replacing it.

2. Check for shorted power semiconductors

Use resistance or diode-mode checks to look for obvious shorts in the bridge rectifier and primary switching MOSFET. In-circuit readings can be influenced by parallel paths, so suspicious results may require isolation.

3. Verify the DC bus only when safe

During an energized test, the bulk capacitor should charge to a high DC voltage appropriate to the input and topology. An absent or collapsing bus indicates a problem before or around the rectification stage.

4. Evaluate controller supply and switching

Check the PWM controller’s supply conditions and whether its startup threshold is reached. If switching begins, use appropriate measurement techniques to determine whether it remains stable or is stopped by protection.

5. Connect primary results to secondary behavior

A healthy primary switching stage with no usable output shifts attention toward transformer transfer, secondary rectification, output loading and feedback.

PRIMARY + SECONDARY DIAGNOSIS

Bring related SMPS measurements into one workflow.

BoardIQ helps connect primary-side and secondary-side readings so the diagnostic path remains clear.
